DESTROYER 666

Biography
Deströyer 666 is a black metal band formed in 1994 by guitarist K.K. Warslut. The group originated in Melbourne, Australia but Warslut is now based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands and the other band members live in Germany and England.

Warslut formed the band following his departure from the cult black metal band Bestial Warlust. The project was a solo venture at first but eventually evolved into a proper band. The group's debut EP, "Violence is the Prince of this World" featured Warslut on guitars, bass and vocals, with drums provided by Matt Skitz from Damaged and Criss Volcano from Abominator. This early outing is particularly different from the rest of their output because of its similarities to death metal, and lack of melody (apart from the song "The Eternal Glory of War", which was later re-recorded for the album Phoenix Rising).

Following this release, Warslut took Deströyer 666 to the next level by building a full line-up that included bassist Bullet Eater (aka Phil Gresik, ex-Bestial Warlust, Hobbs Angel of Death and Mass Confusion), Gospel of the Horns drummer Howitzer and guitarist Shrapnel. With these members the band recorded its first album, Unchain the Wolves that evoked a more melodic but thrashier black metal style. Following this Howitzer was replaced by Deceiver and during 1999 Deströyer 666 recorded Phoenix Rising although this was not released for more than a year. Deceiver is better known as Jarro and was also a member of the Bendigo-based thrash band Destruktor. After leaving Deströyer 666 he formed Nocturnal Graves and runs the underground metal label Apokalyptor Records.

During 2000, Deströyer 666 toured Europe extensively. Dutch drummer Erich de Windt of Sinister and Prostitute Disfigurement joined the band after the recording of the EP "King of Kings" that featured drumming by Abyssic Hate's Shane Rout. Gresik left to be replaced by Simon Berserker. Phoenix Rising was released by Season of Mist in November. De Windt was replaced by German drummer Mersus in 2001 and Deströyer 666 toured through Europe again with Immolation and Deranged, after which the band left Australia for good. Warslut settled in Eindhoven in the Netherlands and Shrapnel began living in London.

The 2002 album Cold Steel... For an Iron Age had a more bombastic and hard-hitting feel than previous releases. The group has since disavowed the cover art, which they claim they never approved. A reissue of the album was scheduled for late 2005 but as of March 2007, this has still not come to light. It is supposed to feature all new artwork as well as bonus songs. The group is also working on a new LP containing all of the songs previously released only on 7" vinyl EPs.

Deströyer 666's lyrical themes deal with warlike and anti-Christian subjects but the band is best known for its metaphorical use of wolves in songs like "Unchain the Wolves", "Lone Wolf Winter", "Sons of Perdition", and "The Calling".

FOREFATHER

Biography
Forefather are a black metal duo from Surrey, England.
The Forefather project was born in September 1997 in Surrey, England by founding members and brothers Athelstan and Wulfstan. Their debut album "Deep Into Time" was recorded in August 1998 at their home-studio "The Croft" and released in March 1999 by their own label Angelisc Enterprises.

"The Fighting Man" was recorded between the months of May and August in 2000. Thanks to an improvement of the equipment at "The Croft" the sound this time around was much improved. The album was released in October 2000, again by Angelisc.

Also during 2000 a limited edition album "Legends Untold" was released by Germany's Millennium Metal Music label. It featured 5 demo recordings, including the never-before-heard "The Fyrdmen Cometh", "The Paths of Yesterdays" and "These Lands". The "Deep Into Time" recording of "These Lands" (left off the final master) and a synth rendition of Ancient Voice (from "Deep Into Time") completed the tracklisting.

Athelstan and Wulfstan next entered the studio in September 2001 to record their 3rd album "Engla Tocyme" (The Coming of the English). Work was completed in November and after a small delay Angelisc released the album in March 2002 along with a re-issue of "Deep Into Time" featuring brand new artwork and bonus-track "These Lands".

Hammerheart Records (now Karmageddon Media) contacted the band in 2003 with a deal offer for the next Forefather opus. After some consideration and negotiation, the Brothers accepted the deal. After spending most of 2003 writing for album number 4, Autumn brought the recording sessions for what was to become "Ours Is The Kingdom".

2004 also saw the re-release on Karmageddon Media of all the previous albums (Deep Into Time, The Fighting Man and Engla Tocyme) with 2 bonus tracks and enhanced artwork.

Since the release of "Ours..." Forefather have collaborated with numerous musicians on the Folkearth CD "A Nordic Poem" (with the song "Rhyming With Thunder") as well as featuring on the Perverted Taste Burzum tribute CD with their version of "Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament". Recording for their second Folkearth track, to be featured on the second album "By the Sword of my Father" has been completed. Wulfstan will also provide vocals to a second track entitled "Scaldic Art". The near future will also see the release of a Falkenbach tribute CD featuring the vocals of Wulfstan on the track "HeathenPride".

A bonus for 2005 has been to see Forefather on vinyl for the first time thanks to Eisenwald Tonschmeide Records in Germany, who released the "Deep Into Time" Limited edition LP with brand new bonus track "A Hearth Companion's Pride" (recorded specially for the LP), additional artwork and pull-out poster.

The latest album "Steadfast" was released through Seven Kingdoms early 2008.

SATANIC SLAUGHTER

Biography
Satanic Slaughter is a black metal band from Sweden.
Having previously performed under the name Evil Cunt, the group first adopted the name Satanic Slaughter in 1985.[1] The group went through several guitarists and other lineup changes in its early years before releasing its first demo, One Night in Hell, in 1988. The group split late in 1989 due to lead guitarist Ztephan "Dark" Karlsson's imprisonment for assault.[1] In 1992, the group re-formed with former members of Seance, and began playing again in November 1994.

This lineup recorded its first album in 1996, which was issued on Necropolis Records; a second album followed on the same label the next year. In 1997, this incarnation of the group disbanded, and all of the members except Dark went on to reunite under the name Witchery;[2] following this, Dark decided to reconstitute the band with new members.[1]

Further lineup changes occurred between 1997 and the release of their next LP, 2000's Afterlife Kingdom, which was followed by touring in Europe with Ragnarok.[1] In the wake of Witchery's success, Necropolis reissued Satanic Slaughter and Land of the Unholy Souls as a two-fer in 2001.[2] 2002 saw the group release Banished to the Underworld and more European touring with Lord Belial and Corporation 187.[1] In 2004, the group returned to Europe to tour with Misericordia and Avenger.[1]

After a short hiatus the group reassembled, again with new members, and announced new plans in March 2006. However, these were quickly cut short when Dark, the only remaining original member of the group, died of heart failure in April 2006.[1]

BULLDOZER

Biography
Bulldozer is a speed/black metal band from Milan, Italy that was active from 1980 until 1990. They have reunited as of 2008.

Bulldozer formed in 1980 by bassist Dario Carria and guitarist Andy Panigada.
They were joined by Erminio Galli on drums. They were forced to split up in 1981 due to national service commitments but reformed in 1983 with Alberto Contini taking over bass and vocal duties and Don Andras playing drums[1].
This line-up recorded the Fallen Angel demo (later to be re-issued as a 7"), their debut, The Day of Wrath and their follow-up, The Final Separation.
The Day of Wrath was produced by Algy Ward of Tank-fame (yet another bass-driven thunderous power trio band) and the influence can clearly be heard.[1]
The Final Separation signaled the abrupt interruption of the deal with Roadrunner records which failed to promote the album effectively and moreover selected a different image from the one suggested by the band as its cover art. The photo was deemed cartoonish and ineffective by the band and the whole affair brought to the signing of a new contract with Italian label "Metalmagic" a sub-division of Discomagic.
Rob Cabrini was brought in on drums for IX:Circle of Hell (1987).
This line-up recorded Neurodeliri (1988) and was captured live in Poland in 1990 for Alive...in Poland.
Their final release was the posthumous Dance Got Sick EP, which, mainly put together by Contini as a "joke" enjoyed a huge success in Japan, prompting him to move to that country to work in music production.
In 2007 Italian power metallers Labyrinth, while touring Japan, hosted Contini onstage for a rendition of Bulldozer's classics. The crowd's estatic appreciation of the songs sparked the first thoughs of reunion. As of 2008, according to statements from both Alberto Contini and Andy Panigada, Bulldozer have reunited. The band has chosen Death Mechanism drummer "Manu" as their third member and should start to work on a new album, with current working title "Unexpected Fate", in August 2008[2].

* Alberto Contini - vocals and bass (1983-1990 2008-?)

SATYRICON

Biography
Satyricon was formed in 1990 by Czral (Carl-Michael Eide) and Wargod. Haavard (Ulver) soon joined them. Satyr took over lead vocals in 1991. Satyricon's current drummer, Frost, who joined the band in 1992, has appeared in 1349, Keep of Kalessin, Gorgoroth, and Gehenna. Members of many other black metal bands have contributed to Satyricon either in the studio or live, including Samoth and Ihsahn of Emperor, Fenriz and Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone, and Obsidian C. of Keep of Kalessin.

The band credits their first album, Dark Medieval Times, with starting a black metal subgenre that they dubbed "medieval metal". The album showed off the fascination Satyricon had with the Middle Ages, along with raw black metal blastbeats produced by Frost, mixed with acoustic guitar and flute. On their next album, The Shadowthrone, this medieval spirit was continued. Satyricon’s third album, Nemesis Divina, contains Norwegian black metal influenced by medieval metal and was released in 1996. Rebel Extravaganza, Satyricon’s fourth album, was released in 1999. It contained more industrial metal influences than the previous albums.

In April and May of 2000 Satyricon toured as a supporting band for Pantera. Phil Anselmo has spoken of his love for black metal numerous times, and has participated in some extreme metal projects with Satyricon frontman Satyr.

Regarding one of their latest albums, Volcano, frontman Satyr stated in a press release / biography on their homepage that "the music is rock based but more extreme; it is black metal pushing the boundaries that began with bands like Venom and Bathory, reinventing ourselves based on a foundation of rock oriented black metal is our philosophy." It resulted in a total of 4 Awards for Volcano being, the Norwegian Grammy for "Best Metal Album", an Alarm award for "Fuel For Hatred" in the category for "Song of the Year", as well as The Alarm Award for "Metal Album of the Year" and The Oslo awards for "Best Overall Album".[1]

Satyricon participated in the Darkthrone tribute Darkthrone Holy Darkthrone, released by Moonfog Productions in 1998, covering the song Kathaarian Life Code. Also in 1998, Satyricon participated in the Bathory tribute In Conspiracy With Satan, released by Hellspawn/No Fashion Records, covering the song Born For Burning. In 2006, Satyricon released Now, Diabolical. The album was somewhat controversial among black metal fans due to its somewhat “radio friendly” take on black metal.

In March 2008, the band headlined the Inferno Metal Festival in Oslo for the first time.

The EP My Skin Is Cold is also included on their latest album, The Age of Nero which was released on November 3, 2008. [2]

MOONSPELL

Biography
Moonspell is a Portuguese black metal/gothic metal band with death/doom metal elements, formed in 1989 as Morbid God. After renaming themselves Moonspell in 1992, they released their first EP Under the Moonspell in 1994, a year before of the release of their first album Wolfheart. The band quickly gained status and became one of the most recognizable metal bands from Portugal.[1]

Moonspell reached the Portuguese top first with their album Sin/Pecado, and were, along with Metallica and Iron Maiden, the only metal band to reach the first place of the Portuguese charts after the release of their album, Memorial, in 2006.[2] With Memorial, Moonspell also became the first Portuguese heavy metal band to have a record certified gold status.[3] They are also very popular in Germany, where Memorial entered in 68th in the Top 100 Chart

The early days (1992-1994)

Although they had been playing since 1989 under the name of "Morbid God",[4] the band became Moonspell in 1992, the same year they released the promo track "Serpent Angel". In 1993, singer Fernando Ribeiro, drummer Miguel Gaspar and bass player Ares (not to be confused with Aires Pereira) released the demo Anno Satanae, which caught the attention of French label Adipocere. It was for Adipocere that Moonspell released in 1994 a mini-album entitled Under the Moonspell. The record was a considered a landmark in Portuguese metal[1] and sold more than 5000 copies, becoming Adipocere's best-selling record at the time.[4] Shortly after the release, they played with Cradle of Filth in a concert in Lisbon.

Breakthrough (1995-1997)

After the release of mini-album Under the Moonspell, Moonspell signed with Century Media for six CDs. Wolfheart was recorded in Germany with producer Waldemar Sorychta and was released in 1995 and was followed by a European tour. Although the album had little or no recognition at the beginning, it was later recognized as a "milestone" by heavy-metal reviews site Metal-Observer.com.[5] During the tour, guitarist Mantus quit the band and was replaced by Ricardo Amorim.

For 1995's Irreligious, the band again recorded with producer Waldemar Sorychta. While previous album was considered black metal, this one fell into the genre of gothic metal. The song "Opium" became the first Moonspell single. It quoted one of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa's heteronyms, Álvaro de Campos, on his poem "Opiário" and its music video, featured the character of poet writing in a bar with the band playing. Along with the release of the album in a convent, the Convento do Beato, there were factors that helped the band selling 10,000 copies of the album in their homeland

DARK FUNERAL

Biography
Dark Funeral is a black metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. They are one of the bands to have emerged in Sweden during the Second wave of black metal.

Their lyrical themes have traditionally pertained to Satanism and anti-Christianity - with Lord Ahriman and Emperor Magus Caligula being practitioners of LaVeyan Satanism.[1] In their earlier years their lyrical themes usually revolved specifically around depictions of Hell and Satan, but since Emperor Magus Caligula joined the band their lyrics have focused more on blasphemy and anti-Christian rhetoric although there have been several exceptions to this.

Dark Funeral was founded by guitarists Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon (David Parland) in 1993. Shortly afterwards drummer Draugen and bassist and vocalist Themgoroth joined the band. Their self-titled and self-financed album, Dark Funeral, was recorded in 1994 at Dan Swanö's Uni-Sound studio in January. It was released on May 4, the same day the band performed their first gig at Luse Lottes Pub in Oslo, Norway alongside bands such as fellow live debut band Gorgoroth and Marduk (who performed their first show abroad). After the recording sessions, Draugen left the band and was replaced by Equimanthorn.

In 1995, the band signed up to No Fashion Records and started preparing songs for a full-length album. After an attempt to record The Secrets of the Black Arts at Uni-Sound studios (again with Dan Swanö), the band decided to relocate to Abyss Studio and re-record the entire album. During the break between studio sessions, the band wrote the song When Angels Forever Die. With engineer Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy) on board, the band finally got the production they were looking for. Shortly after, Dark Funeral played their first festival gig, Under The Black Sun I in Berlin. A few weeks prior to this gig Emperor Magus Caligula (Magnus 'Masse' Broberg, the original vocalist of Hypocrisy) replaced Themgoroth and eventually became a permanent member. The band also shot their first video for the track "The Secrets Of The Black Arts", which was well received and played on music channels all over the world.[citation needed] On January 28, 1996, the band's first full-length-album, The Secrets Of The Black Arts, was released and the album was soon licensed to Metal Blade (North America) and Mystic Production (Poland). Equimanthorn was soon replaced by Alzazmon (Tomas Asklund, later renowned for his work with Dissection and the Infernus-fronted version of Gorgoroth). The line-up of Emperor Magus Caligula, Lord Ahriman, Alzazmon and Blackmoon recorded their version of Bathory's Call From The Grave and Equimanthorn for the Bathory tribute, In Conspiracy With Satan.(These also appeared later re-mastered for the re-titled re-release of the band's debut In The Sign…). Blackmoon eventually left and founded War a year later. Together with Necromass, the band embarked on the Satanic War Tour I throughout Europe.

DIMMU BORGIR

Biography
Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1993. "Dimmu Borgir" means "Dark Cities" or "Dark Fortresses" in Icelandic and Old Norse. The name is derived from a volcanic formation in Iceland, Dimmuborgir.
For All Tid and Stormblåst
Dimmu Borgir started as a melodic black metal band in 1993. Formed by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv, the band released an EP in 1994 entitled Inn i evighetens mørke ("Into the Darkness of Eternity" in English). This short EP sold out within weeks, and the band followed up with the 1994 full length album For all tid. This album featured musical contributions by members of Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende. The initial lineup consisted of Shagrath playing drums with Tjodalv on guitar and Silenoz backing vocals, however this changed before the release of Stormblåst (translates to "Storm Blown") on Cacophonous Records in 1996. Stormblåst received high praise from many melodic black metal fans, and is often regarded as a highlight of the band's career. It is also the last album which features all lyrics written and sung in Norwegian.

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
After Stormblåst, Dimmu Borgir's lineup took a sharp turn. Keyboardist Stian Aarstad left the band due to his obligation to serve in the Norwegian army, thus being unable to participate in the 1996 recording of Devil's Path. That period was also marked by the departure of their bassist Brynjard Tristan and the arrival of Nagash. Stian Aarstad returned for the recording of 1997's Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. While on tour to support the album, he had trouble attending rehearsals and being on tour, and was subsequently fired. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant was a huge success for the band, and was their first release signed to Nuclear Blast, a well-known German record label. The album was recorded in the Abyss Studios, owned by Hypocrisy's frontman Peter Tägtgren.

Spiritual Black Dimensions and Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
After the tour for Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, the band recruited new members Mustis on keyboards and Astennu on lead guitar. Dimmu Borgir's following full-length albums Spiritual Black Dimensions in 1999 and 2001's Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, both met critical acclaim.[citation needed]. However, a new line-up change occurred between the two albums; Nagash quit and was replaced by new bassist/clean singer ICS Vortex, as well as Tjodalv leaving (due to his family commitments, and to form the subsequent band Susperia), only to be replaced with Nicholas Barker, fresh out of Cradle of Filth. Astennu was fired from his guitar duties as well due to incompatibility (reportedly, he was speaking ill of the band behind their backs and wanted them to be a Morbid Angel cover band)

Death Cult Armageddon
Despite regular video play on MTV2 and Fuse TV that their follow-up album would receive, the band has stated that they are not "commercially-oriented," and instead, they 'simply wish to spread their message to more people'. In 2003, Dimmu Borgir used their major record label financial leverage to record an album titled Death Cult Armageddon. Sections of the album were recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra to enhance the classical arrangements which have always augmented the band's style. However, in multiple interviews Shagrath mentions the many troubles and shortcomings that came along with using the orchestra from Prague. Two full weeks of studio work were spent cleaning up the mistakes. On their following album the band decided to not use a live orchestra instead leaving the duty mostly to the band's keyboardist, Mustis, in the studio. In 2004, Dimmu Borgir headlined Ozzfest.

In 2005, the band did a complete re-recording of the Stormblåst album, featuring Hellhammer of Mayhem fame as the session drummer. The album also featured a dvd with a live performance from the 2004 Ozzfest tour.

In Sorte Diaboli
Dimmu Borgir's newest album, In Sorte Diaboli, was released April 24, 2007. A special edition version was released in a boxed case with a DVD, backward-printed lyrics, and a mirror. The album artwork was released on February 14, 2007 on a promotional webpage for the album. This album features the drumming of Hellhammer of Mayhem, who had to leave the band in mid tour in 2007 because of a neck injury, resulting in limited movement of his right arm. With the release of this album, Dimmu Borgir became the first black metal band with a number one album in their native country.

Cradle of Filth

Biography
Cradle of Filth are an extreme metal band from Suffolk, England, formed in 1991. They have been embraced and disowned with equal fervour by various metal communities, and their particular subgenre has provoked a great deal of discussion.[1]

The band's musical style evolved from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other extreme metal styles, while their lyrical themes and imagery are heavily influenced by gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films. The band has successfully broken free from its original niche by courting mainstream publicity (often to the chagrin of its early fanbase), and this increased accessibility has brought coverage by the likes of Kerrang! and MTV, frequent main stage appearances at major festivals such as Ozzfest, Download and even the mainstream Sziget Festival, and in turn a more "commercial" image. They have sometimes been perceived as Satanic by casual observers, although their outright lyrical references to Satanism are few and far between, and use of Satanic imagery has arguably always had more to do with the shock value than any seriously-held beliefs. According to Metal Hammer magazine, they are the most successful British metal band since Iron Maiden.

Cradle of Filth was formed in Suffolk, England in 1991. The band's original members consisted of vocalist Dani Filth, guitarist Paul Ryan, keyboardist Ben Ryan (Paul's brother), bassist John Richard and drummer Darren White. With this line-up, Cradle of Filth recorded a demo in 1992, entitled Invoking the Unclean. Soon after, they recorded their second demo, Orgiastic Pleasures Foul with new guitarist Robin Eaglestone (aka. Robin Graves). He left the band shortly afterwards, but following the departure of John Richard, Eaglestone returned to take his place as bassist. Guitarist Paul Allender joined the band at the same time. Following these changes, another demo was recorded, entitled Total Fucking Darkness. White left the band soon after, paving the way for the entry of drummer Nicholas Barker.

Cradle of Filth signed with Cacophonous Records in 1994, releasing their debut, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. A series of differences between band members arose, and there were also problems between the band and the label. Their second work, the EP Vempire or Dark Faerytales in Phallustein, issued in 1996, saw further changes in the line-up. The Ryan brothers left, and Stuart Anstis (guitarist) and Damien Gregori (keyboardist) joined, and Paul Allender was replaced by Jared Demeter. While writing material for a new album, the band negotiated their departure from Cacophonus Records, and in November 1996, signed with European label Music for Nations. Later that year, they released Dusk... and Her Embrace, an album that substantially expanded the group's growing cult following.

Their next album was Cruelty and the Beast, released in 1998. Two years later the group returned with From the Cradle to Enslave, an EP that featured new drummer Adrian Erlandsson (formerly of Sweden's At the Gates and The Haunted), as Barker had departed to join Dimmu Borgir. The band's several lineup changes continued apace as Paul Allender rejoined the group and Martin Powell (ex-Anathema and My Dying Bride) replaced Smith on keyboards for the full-length album Midian, Cradle's last for Music For Nations, which was appropriately released on Hallowe'en 2000. Bitter Suites to Succubi was released on the band's own Abracadaver label in the UK and Spitfire Records in the US in 2001. The group signed to Sony for one album in 2003, adding a choir and orchestra for Damnation and a Day, and moved to Roadrunner Records (where they remain) for 2004's Nymphetamine, followed by the seventh full-length Thornography in 2006, and Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder in 2008.

SACRAMENTUM

Biography
Sacramentum were a black metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden, formed by Nisse Karlén (vocals/guitar) in the summer of 1990 under the name of Tumulus.[1] Shortly thereafter, Anders Brolycke joined as a second guitarist.

The group's first official recordings were made in the end of 1992; just before the release of the demotape called Sedes Impiorum the band name was changed to Sacramentum.

In February 1994 Sacramentum went to Unisound Studio to record the self-financed five-track EP Finis Malorum, which was re-released by Adipocere Records about a year later. Following the release of this EP, Nicklas Rudolfsson (now also in Runemagick, Swordmaster and Deathwitch) joined in on drums; and Nisse shifted from guitar to bass.

With this three-piece line-up Sacramentum went back to Unisound Studio in June 1995 to record their full-length debut, entitled Far Away from the Sun. Finally released in June 1996, the album was hailed in some circles as a masterpiece. The band then embarked on a tour of Europe with Ancient Rites, Bewitched and Enthroned.

In the spring 1997, Sacramentum signed with Century Media Records. The second full-length album, The Coming of Chaos, was recorded in June 1997 in King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque's studio, Los Angered Recordings, and released in September 1997. It showcased the band moving in more of a blackened death metal direction. The band once again embarked on a tour of Europe, this time with labelmates Old Man's Child and Rotting Christ.

Sacramentum's final album, Thy Black Destiny, was recorded in September 1998 Andy LaRocque's studio Los Angered Recordings. The recording line-up was augmented by Nicklas Andersson (also in Lord Belial), who joined the group as a permanent guitarist. However, the band apparently split up sometime thereafter.

GRAVELAND

Biography
Graveland is a Polish black metal band which was formed in 1992 by Rob Darken (born Robert Fudali). The lyrics of Graveland are strongly inspired by nature, paganism and nationalism.

Darken, who started Graveland as a solo project and recorded the first demos “Necromanteion” and “Drunemeton” solely, inspired by bands such as Bathory. In 1993, drummer Maciej “Capricornus” Dąbrowski joined the band, which recorded the demo “In the Glare of Burning Churches”. In 1994 the band was joined by Karcharoth and recorded the demo “The Celtic Winter” which was released as an EP by German label No Colours Records which still releases the band’s albums. A few months later, the band’s first album “Carpathian Wolves” was released by Eternal Devils Records. With “Carpathian Wolves”, the band drew several bigger metal label’s attention and signed to Austrian label Lethal Records, which released “Thousand Swords”, which is seen as the band’s best release and as a cult album by many fans and black metal scene members,[1] in 1995. After several racist statements the band was dropped by its label. Darken then founded his own label “Isengard” (later “Eastclan”) and re-released “Thousand Swords” on cassette. Its booklet contains a statement against both Lethal Records and two other bigger metal labels, Osmose Productions and Nuclear Blast, which are dismissed as part of a “Jewish business conspiracy”; ironically, Graveland song “Born for War” was released on “Nuclear Blast Soundcheck - Series Volume 2” in 1995.

With 1998 album “Immortal Pride”, the band took on a powerful folk influence, and more specifically from soundtracks such as the Conan the Barbarian movie soundtrack;[2] the music moved to viking metal/pagan metal, became more epic and bombastic, with a strong use of keyboards and chorales, and the songs became much longer: “Immortal Pride” consists of four songs, two of them being the intro and outro and the other ones being 24 and 17 minutes long.

In 2000, “Raiders of Revenge”, a split release with the band Honor, and the album “Creed of Iron / Prawo Stali” were released. Since this album, Darken works without Capricornus on drums.

In September 2008, four Graveland releases were indexed by the German Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien.

Ideology
Rob Darken already expressed Neo-Nazi views in early interviews, in which he exacted an “Aryan Heathen war” on “Judeo-Christianity”,[3] democracy and an alleged Jewish conspiracy.[4] Darken sees himself as a Heathen and Christianity as the worst enemy of white Europeans. He exalts the latter’s return to their ancestor’s heritage. Darken spoke out against “race mixing”.[5] On the EP “Raise Your Sword!”, he declares Heathendom to be the religion of white Europeans.

Graveland is extremely popular among NSBM fans and generally seen as an NSBM band.[6] Darken rejects the label, however, telling Decibel magazine: “I do not think Graveland is an NSBM band. Graveland is regarded as a NSBM band because of my political convictions, [which] most people would call extreme right-wing National Socialist convictions.”[6]

NOKTURNAL MORTUM

Biography
Nokturnal Mortum started as death metal band Suppuration in 1992, then turned to black metal and changed name to Crystalline Darkness but “had to change the name back in 1993/94 to Nocturnal Mortum because there already existed a band with that name in western underground.”[1] Then the band “changed the letter so that we wouldn't find a band with the same name again like it was the case with Crystaline Darkness.”[1] Nokturnal Mortum gained their first Western recognition with the release of their album “Goat Horns, their second full length album, notable for having two keyboardists play on the album, often on the same song, and for mixing traditional Ukrainian music with black metal. As traditional instrumentation gained in significance and the lyrical concept moved away from black metal’s patterns, the newer releases are classified as pagan metal.

The band’s first albums were released through The End Records and (as licence pressings) through Nuclear Blast,[2] but the label and band separated after releasing the album “NeChrist” and a re-release of the “Lunar Poetry” demo because of the band’s ideology: “We had a contract with The End Records but it was broken. We have different points of view. They didn't like our policy, we didn't like the way they do business. They owe us some money. That was enough for a conflict.”[1].

Vocalist Knjaz Varggoth’s ideology and the album “Weltanschauung”’s lyrics are influenced by “esoteric Hitlerist” and Holocaust denier Miguel Serrano.[3]

MERCYFUL FATE

Biography
Mercyful Fate is an influential Danish heavy metal band often cited among the influences in the black metal, thrash metal, power metal, and progressive metal genres

he band was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1980 from the remaining members of Hank Shermann's band Brats and King Diamond's band Black Rose. In early 1981, they helped Michael Denner with demos for his band Danger Zone. Soon, Shermann, Denner, Diamond, and Denner's bass player Timi Grabber realized their potential as a unit and started performing as Mercyful Fate. The band experienced the usual member changes for a new band, as Denner left (and later returned). In addition, the drummer position was a revolving door, but Kim Ruzz finally established himself as the drummer.

In early 1982, the band contributed to the Ebony Records sampler Metallic Storm. Later on in the year, Mercyful Fate recorded its first material, Mercyful Fate, on vinyl for the Dutch label Rave On. The release included heavy and evil material that would later inspire the black metal genre (although Venom and Bathory are as equally considered as the forefathers of black metal).

Following the EP, the band released Melissa in 1983 and Don't Break the Oath in 1984, which are now considered by many to be classics in both the power metal and black metal genres. Following the tour (which saw them play in the United States for the first time) in support of Don't Break the Oath, Diamond split ways with Mercyful Fate in April 1985 as a result of frustration over creative differences with Hank Shermann. With him, Diamond brought band mates Hansen and Denner to found a new band under his own name. Diamond's new venture continued the tradition of Mercyful Fate, but with a more progressive, conceptual twist to it. In response, Hank Shermann formed the band Fate, which pursued a more AOR direction.

DARKTHRONE

Biography
Darkthrone is an influential Norwegian black metal band. They formed in 1988 as a death metal group, but after embracing the black metal style in 1991, they became a driving force in the Norwegian black metal scene. For most of this period Darkthrone has consisted of just two musicians, Nocturno Culto and Fenriz. They claim to be influenced by punk and have sought to remain outside the music mainstream.[1] Their recent work has incorporated more crust punk traits.

Death metal years
The band that would become Darkthrone formed during 1986 in Kolbotn, a small suburb of Oslo. They were a death metal group by the name of Black Death, and its members were Gylve Nagell, Ivar Enger and Anders Risberget. In 1988 the band changed their name to Darkthrone and were joined by Ted Skjellum and Dag Nilsen. During 1988 and 1989 the band independently released four demo tapes: Land of Frost, A New Dimension, Thulcandra, and Cromlech.

They were subsequently signed to the independent record label Peaceville Records with a four album contract. In 1990 they recorded their first studio album, Soulside Journey. The album was cleanly-produced in a technical death metal style, although there were some elements of black metal present, in terms of the album's music and imagery.

Immediately following the release of this album, the band continued writing and recording new material. These demos were entirely instrumental but they demonstrated the band's gradual shift towards black metal. In 1997 they would be released on the compilation album Goatlord.

Early black metal years
The Darkthrone logo, as it has appeared on the band's releases since its first album, Soulside Journey.

During 1991, Darkthrone adopted the aesthetic style that would come to represent the black metal scene, wearing corpsepaint and working under pseudonyms. Gylve Nagell became "Fenriz", Ted Skjellum became "Nocturno Culto" and Ivar Enger became "Zephyrous". They began recording their second album, which was released at the beginning of 1992 and entitled A Blaze in the Northern Sky. The album contained Darkthrone's first black metal recordings, and Peaceville Records was originally skeptical about releasing it due to Darkthrone's extreme diversion from their original death metal style.[2]After the album was recorded, bassist Dag Nilsen left the band, and is not credited anywhere on the album.

The band's third album, Under a Funeral Moon, was released in 1993. It marked Darkthrone's total conversion to the black metal style, and is considered a landmark for the development of the genre as a whole. This album also marked the last album on which guitarist Zephyrous would perform.

It was followed by their fourth album, Transilvanian Hunger, which was released in 1994. This was Darkthrone's first album to be recorded with just two members, Nocturno Culto and Fenriz. The band would remain a duo from this point onwards. Transilvanian Hunger was characterised by a very "raw" or "low fidelity" recording style and musical simplicity. The album's release caused some controversy: some of its lyrics were written by the infamous Norwegian black metal musician Varg Vikernes, and its booklet contained anti-Jewish phrases.

MAYHEM

Biography
Mayhem is a black metal band formed in 1984[2] in Oslo, Norway. They are regarded as one of the pioneers of the influential Norwegian black metal scene. Mayhem's career has been highly controversial, primarily due to the suicide of vocalist Dead, murder of guitarist Euronymous, and their violent stage performances.

Over time Mayhem has evolved through a variety of black metal styles, delving at times into areas of dark avant-garde industrial and electronica

Early years (1984–1987)
During 1986, Mayhem recorded their first demo, entitled Pure Fucking Armageddon

Inspired by groups such as Venom, Slayer, and Celtic Frost,[4] Mayhem was founded in 1984 by guitarist/vocalist Øystein Aarseth (aka Euronymous), bass guitarist Jørn Stubberud (aka Necrobutcher), and drummer Kjetil Manheim (aka Manheim). The band name is taken from the Venom song, "Mayhem with Mercy."[5] This lineup recorded and released the demo Pure Fucking Armageddon. Euronymous concentrated solely on guitar following the hire of a vocalist in 1986. During 1986 and 1987, Sven Erik Kristiansen (aka Maniac) and Eirik Nordheim (aka Messiah) were recruited as vocalists. This lineup recorded the band's first album, Deathcrush, and released it through Euronymous's newly formed label Posercorpse Music.

The initial 1,000 copy release of Deathcrush quickly sold out. It was later repressed in 1993 by Posercorpse Music, which was renamed Deathlike Silence Productions as a joint venture with Euronymous's Oslo specialist record shop Helvete. Euronymous's plans for this new outlet included that it was to be "...like a black church in the future. We've thought about having total darkness inside, so that people would have to carry torches to be able to see the records."[citation needed]

By mid-1988 both Manheim and Maniac had left the band: Manheim left to find a mainstream job, and Maniac left due to depression

EMPEROR

Biography
In their youth, Ihsahn and Samoth met at a rock music seminar. The two young men began playing together under various names; first Dark Device, then Xerasia, then Embryonic. The group soon evolved into the now well-known band Thou Shalt Suffer. Soon, however, Samoth began to write music outside of Thou Shalt Suffer, and together with Ihsahn and a new bass player called Mortiis (later of his own eponymous band Mortiis), Emperor was formed. After a short while together, the band released a demo entitled Wrath of the Tyrant. It quickly gained popularity in the underground and attracted the attention of the then-start-up label Candlelight. Soon afterwards, a record contract was signed, Samoth moved to rhythm guitar, Ihsahn continued the vocal duties and lead guitars and Faust was recruited as a drummer. Shortly after, the band was signed to the infamous first black metal label, Deathlike Silence Productions, and planned to release their next cd soon, though the band never managed to release any material while signed to DSP.

In the summer of 1992, a series of events were set in motion by the black metal inner circle. Samoth, along with various other black metallers, set out to burn down the ancient churches of Norway.[3] Also in 1992, Faust was in Lillehammer to see the newly-constructed Olympic park. A homosexual man named Rhys Adamec approached him and suggested that they go together in the nearby forest. Faust agreed, and once in the forest, the man began to make strong sexual advances towards him. Faust then stabbed the man to death.[4][5] He was not convicted until a year later. After Faust committed the murder, he went with Euronymous of Mayhem to burn bibles and hymnals at a nearby ski-jump.[6] In the summer of 1993, the band began working on their first full-length record. Emperor toured with British group Cradle of Filth on tour, and after this tour the band ceased wearing corpse paint; they stated that it was becoming a trend and losing its original significance and symbolism. In the autumn of that year, the police began to investigate the murder of Euronymous of Mayhem, naming Varg Vikernes (of Burzum) as a suspect; this investigation eventually led to the incarceration of Samoth for arson, and of Faust for the murder of Adamec.

In 1994, In the Nightside Eclipse was released, and earned Emperor widespread acclaim and a large fanbase. The album is considered by many a definitive black metal record, with its epic, evolving song structures, ambient keyboard sounds, and raspy, spewed vocals.

After Samoth's parole, the band was joined by Trym and Alver on drums and bass respectively, and at the end of 1996, Emperor entered the studio to record Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. Featuring a much more progressive sound than their earlier output, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk won the 'album of the year' poll in many popular metal magazines around the world, including UK Terrorizer and US Metal Maniacs. Bassist Alver soon left.

Now continuing their career as a trio, with Ihsahn handling keyboards, vocals, guitars and bass, the band recorded their third album IX Equilibrium and toured Europe and the United States. It was around 2000 when Samoth and Trym started to gravitate more towards death metal, while Ihsahn directed his musical exploration towards the more artistic and progressive side of extreme metal, as shown by his side project, Peccatum. Thus, in 2001, Emperor decided to disband after releasing one final album, Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise, composed entirely by Ihsahn.

Following the breakup, Samoth and Trym continued playing in the black/death metal outfit Zyklon, while Ihsahn concentrated on his family project Peccatum. Later Ihsahn announced a solo project, much in the vein of Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise and Peccatum, featuring drummer Asgeir Mickelson of Borknagar and Vintersorg. It has generated positive feedback in the black metal community.

Recently, Ihsahn announced an Emperor Tablature Book based on their Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath compilation album, containing thirteen Emperor tracks from their back catalogue. It will be transcribed by Ihsahn with a foreword also by him, and is to be released October 31 via Candlelight Records. Emperor's albums were also re-issued in a special box version with a bonus poster on Aug. 21, 2007.

Samoth announced on October 23rd, 2007 that Emperor will be preparing a second official DVD release[1]. On December 8th, 2008 it was revealed that this release will be called Live Inferno and come in the form of a double-disc live album and a live DVD, taken from their appearances at Inferno and Wacken metal festivals during their brief reunion[2]. It will be released on April 16nd, 2009 in Europe and April 21st in North America.

CELTIC FROST

Biography
Celtic Frost's former frontman, guitarist and singer Tom Gabriel Fischer, adopted the alias Tom Warrior. With Steve Warrior on bass, he formed one of the earliest extreme metal bands, Hellhammer, in 1982. Steve Warrior was later replaced by Martin Eric Ain - also a pseudonym. The band attracted a small international fan-base, got signed to Noise Records in Germany and recorded their debut EP Apocalyptic Raids in March 1984, now a rare finding on e-Bay or second hand record stores around the world.

By May 1984, Hellhammer had disbanded. Fischer and Ain, along with session drummer Stephen Priestly, regrouped as Celtic Frost. Their 1984 debut mini-LP, Morbid Tales was a hit in the underground metal scene, and the band set out on its first tour, through Germany and Austria. This was followed with an EP "Emperor's Return". Both early releases are now available on the one CD. One of their more influential recordings was 1985's "To Mega Therion" which did not feature Ain on bass, but stand-in Dominic Steiner. Ain did return after the album was recorded however. In 1987 followed Into the Pandemonium. These albums were some of the pivotal LPs for underground metal and inducted a new and more varied sound. Celtic Frost, along with Venom and Bathory were pioneers in the still underground black metal scene, although Celtic Frost were much more experimental with the addition of classical instruments, operatic female vocals and sampling. They were often given the title of avant-garde metal.

After a subsequent North American tour (which saw the addition of a second guitarist, Ron Marks to the groups ranks), financial trouble, personal tension between the band members and an ill-fated relationship with their record label led to a complete dissolution of the band. Six months later, Warrior decided to reform the band with Stephen Priestly back on drums, Oliver Amberg on guitars and Curt Victor Bryant on bass. The resulting album Cold Lake was a disappointment to most of the group's established fan-base but achieved notable success in the North American market. Bryant fired Amberg and former live guitarist Ron Marks returned as a guest for the recording of Vanity/Nemesis in 1990. The most significant change, however, was the return of early bassist Martin Eric Ain. But Celtic Frost's reputation did not fully recover. The group's next (and, as it would turn out, last for several years) album was a collection of rare and unreleased recordings called Parched With Thirst Am I and Dying (1992). The compilation's title was inspired by an old Roman prayer. It featured unreleased material, re-recorded versions of older songs and some studio session versions, closing the chapter on one of the most important underground and experimental bands of all time.

A final album titled "Under Apollyon's Sun" never eventuated under that title, although Fischer co-founded a new group called Apollyon Sun.

IMMORTAL

Biography
Immortal's beginnings can be traced to the death metal band Old Funeral, formed in 1988, in which both Abbath and Demonaz were members. The band's frontman Abbath also formed the band Amputation in 1989, releasing two demos before deciding to form Immortal.[1] This new band consisted of band members from both Amputation and Old Funeral. Though remaining members of Old Funeral attempted to keep the band alive, they dissolved prior Immortal's first demo releases.

Immortal's early full-length releases were of a traditional black metal style, but their acclaimed album At the Heart of Winter saw the band begin to experiment with a complex fusion of black metal and German thrash metal. The resulting sound was a style which characterized Immortal's later works. Immortal has been influential to many modern metal artists. The band has arguably maintained the most occult-mysticism image and way of life traditionally credited to black metal. Conversely, unlike many black metal bands, Immortal does not espouse Satanism.

They are often noted as having created their own niche in black metal which has guaranteed them a spot on the list of the best bands in the history of the genre. Several classic albums such as Pure Holocaust, Battles In The North, At The Heart Of Winter and Sons Of Northern Darkness also help to solidify their status. With recent (2006) mid-price reissues of their classic back catalog in major markets, their music is now much more widely available. A defining feature of the band is their lyrics that focus on an imaginary world that is plagued by war and suffering, called Blashyrkh, ruled by the Mighty Ravendark, which is inspired by Demonaz's daily walks in the icy Norwegian forests that surround his home. Their over the top appearance with corpse paint and the cult status of their artwork (such as the album cover of Battles in the North and the cover and internal artwork of At The Heart Of Winter) has also contributed to their notability. The band has also distanced itself from the criminal activities and controversy that is usually associated with black metal. There have been a few minor controversies with members of Immortal after they have left the band, such as original rhythm guitarist Jørn's conviction of church burning, as well as Erik "Grim" Brødreskift's suicide in 1999.

Amputation recorded their first two demos in 1989 with Demonaz Doom Occulta on guitar and vocals, Jørn Inge Tunsberg on guitars, and Padden on drums.[1] The group later reformed as Immortal around 1990–1991, adding Abbath Doom Occulta on bass and lead vocals and replacing Padden with Armagedda. They released their self-titled EP in 1991 which saw a stylistic change to black metal. This was followed by their debut album Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism in 1992 which is similar in style to the following two albums but many have noted it is slower than later recordings. While Jørn had already left the band, his guitar parts were left on the record even though he was not credited in the album insert.

Gradually, Immortal gained immense popularity in the underground, partly due to their infamous music video for The Call of the Wintermoon (though the TV station which aired the video proceeded to mock the band in the following interview and labeled them as "Satanists".) In describing the band's sound, stand-in drummer Kolgrim said the band's style was that of "Pure Holocaust Metal" which found its way onto the bands next album, Pure Holocaust, which itself is seen as a genre-defining milestone. The album was recorded by Demonaz and Abbath although they found Grim just a few weeks afterwards and he was put on the cover photo shoot. The next album, Battles in the North was also recorded by only Abbath and Demonaz as Grim had been asked to leave as they felt he could not help them move their music forward. Grim committed suicide in 1999 (although not due the fact that he had been fired from Immortal). There is a music festival in his memory, the Hole in the Sky Festival, which Immortal frequently headline, most recently in 2007.

In 1995, the band released two video clips directed by British artist David Palser, entitled Masters of Nebulah Frost, through Osmose Productions. They featured many bizarrely-shot images of frozen landscapes and vast forests with the band performing two songs from the album Battles In The North, "Grim And Frostbitten Kingdoms" and "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)" on a Norwegian mountainside. The video for "Grim And Frostbitten Kingdoms" features Mayhem drummer Hellhammer. These clips have become the template for many other bands producing such works, similarly to how "The Call Of The Wintermoon" is also highly influential. Hellhammer toured with the band for Battles In The North and was asked to join by Abbath and Demonaz but declined.

Apart from the two core members Abbath and Demonaz, Immortal did not find a stable lineup until 1996, when drummer Horgh joined the band. Horgh joined the band in time to actually play on the record Blizzard Beasts which was Immortal's first real experimental style, combing the sound of Immortal's three albums before it with a death metal style sound. It was not critically acclaimed although in time it has become more popular with fans. A major turning point for the band was in 1997 when Demonaz (then main lyricist and guitarist) suffered acute tendinitis in his arm and was unable to continue playing. Despite this, he has continued writing lyrics and has been a manager for the band, accompanying them on tour, releasing updates and giving interviews about how things are progressing with the band. Bassist Abbath took over the guitar duty. Abbath and Horgh wrote and recorded the band's next album, At The Heart Of Winter. This album was very different from what had come before as it sounded much closer to thrash metal than any album before or after it and was extremely well met by fans and critics alike. During the tours for this album, the band recruited Iscariah to stand in for bass duties and were suitably impressed with his skills that they made him a full time member.

The next album, and first with Iscariah, Damned In Black was more similar to their old style but kept many thrashy elements as well as some death metal influences. It was well received but is frequently overlooked as it came between two of their classic albums, At The Heart Of Winter and Sons Of Northern Darkness. In 2000, Immortal signed a record contract with German label Nuclear Blast; this change to a more prominent record company didn't affect their style, a fact proven by their record Sons of Northern Darkness. Two months after this, Iscariah announced his intention to leave the band and was replaced by Saroth for the next few months.

Immortal decided to split during the summer of 2003 for various personal reasons of the band members. However, in mid-October 2005, Abbath, Demonaz, and original Immortal drummer Armagedda reunited, and along with Gorgoroth bassist King ov Hell and Enslaved guitarist Ice Dale (Arve Isdal), they began work on a new project, dubbed I. This new band entered the studio at the end of April 2006 to record their debut album, Between Two Worlds, released in November 2006. Demonaz also features as lyricist for the band.

In early June 2006 came word via the German magazine Rock Hard that Abbath, Demonaz and Horgh had decided to resurrect Immortal once more. Abbath is quoted as saying:
“ I didn't really want to say it, but I don't give a shit. We will come back, stronger than ever. I've met with Horgh for the first time in over a year. He's built his new house here, right around the corner. In the next few days we will begin to rehearse our old 'Blizzard Beasts' classics. I'm already really hot on the idea. Immortal are timeless frost. One year more or less doesn't make a difference. We have all the time in the world.”

In July 2006 it was announced that Immortal would reunite for a string of summer shows in 2007. They headlined the Inferno Festival in April, the Tuska Open Air festival in June/July, Metal Camp festival in July, and the Wacken Open Air festival in August. They also performed twice in the United States in July 2007. Filling in as bassist for these dates was the Aura Noir bassist Apollyon.[2] Immortal have since announced the band's first tour of Australia and New Zealand in March 2008.

After the reunion, Abbath and Horgh decided to reform the band on a permanent basis and have been hinting at a new album to be released in 2008. This was confirmed by Demonaz in an interview with Eternal Terror [1]. Apollyon will be the permanent replacement for Iscariah and the three are now working with Demonaz on material for their next album. In a more recent interview with the Dutch metal webzine ZwareMetalen.com, album producer Peter Tägtgren announced that the recording of this album will start around February 2009

MARDUK

Biography
Marduk is a black metal band from Norrköping, Sweden. The band formed in 1991 and released their first record that year, placing them among the pioneers of Swedish black metal. Their name is derived from the Babylonian god Marduk, patron deity of Babylon.

Musical style
Marduk was formed by Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson in order to form the "most blasphemous band in the world"[1]. Their musical style was that of a straight-forward death metal influenced take on black metal music, but as the years progressed their style and imagery became more of a fast and intense form of black metal;[2] by the release of Panzer Division Marduk the music had become so quick and insane that fans have dubbed their style as "norsecore".[citation needed] Marduk's predominant lyrical topics are Satanism, anti-Christianity, Third Reich history and World War II. The latter two are a later addition to their lyrical/conceptual themes, stemming from their 1999 release Panzer Division Marduk. Marduk have recorded further songs relating to those chapters of human history, such as "The Hangman of Prague" (moniker of Prague "Reichsprotektor" Reinhard Heydrich), "Night of the Long Knives", "Deathmarch" and others. It has to be noted, however, that by singing about Nazi Germany, Marduk do not subscribe to the tenets of the national socialist black metal scene, their approach not being justificatory or praising.

BEHEMOTH

Biography
Behemoth was formed in 1991 as a trio, starting with raw and primitive black metal rehearsal tapes (Endless Damnation) and demos (The Return of the Northern Moon), the most significant of which was the second one—...From the Pagan Vastlands (1993)—showing the growing potential of the then teenage Nergal.[citation needed] Tomasz Wróblewski likes to announce that his metal influences sprung from Black Sabbath for giving him his ideas of "demonic" chords.

This tape was released by Polish label Pagan Records and later on by the American Wild Rags. Signing with a little-known black metal bands from mid-eastern Europe with enormous potential. Consequently, stepping forward, the band (as the three piece with Nergal, Baal, and Les) recorded their second album Grom.

Grom has been the most discussed release thus far, due to its many different influences and musical styles, using female vocals as well as acoustic guitars and synthesizers. At the same time, Behemoth finally got a chance to play live shows in its native country and finally tour around Europe, gaining stage experience as well as positive feedback from the audience. Two years later, the band recorded a third album, titled Pandemonic Incantations which was a "breakthrough moment" in Behemoth's short career. The reactions of their ever-increasing fanbase and metal media set a new standard for them.[citation needed] However, due to a lack of promotion, the album was not well-publicized. After another extensive tour, Behemoth signed a two-album deal with Italy's Avantgarde Music in the fall of 1998. The first result of this new collaboration was the successful[citation needed] album Satanica, on which the black metal sound had evolved into blackened death metal.

The label also secured two European tours for the band in support of Deicide and Satyricon respectively. During that period, Behemoth had to go through some line-up changes and problems with their ex-Polish label. The new members then were Novy (formerly known from Devilyn, now in Vader, Dies Irae) who handled the bass duties and Havok who became the band's guitarist. The new line-up resulted in Behemoth signing with Mystic, a Polish label. The next follow-up release to Satanica was Thelema.6. Massive guitar parts and precise drumming, with influences from different sources, showed that Behemoth were there to offer something really varied and innovative once again[citation needed], complete with characteristic fierce brutality and speed. Arrangements and technical invention on individual compositions made the album an ultimate one[citation needed] for the blackened death metal genre.

Thelema.6 has been supported by the worldwide press and media[citation needed], including having their album being officially released in Russia and Brazil for the first time. Continuing the support for Thelema.6, Behemoth appeared in several prestigious live events like Wacken Open Air, With Full Force, Inferno Metal Festival, Mystic Festival, and Mind Over Matter Autumn. They started first headlining tour alongside with Carpathian Forest and Khold, followed by festival tour in Poland (Thrash em All Fest. with Vader and Krisiun, among others).

In 2001, Behemoth focused on writing new material for a sixth studio album. Meantime, they completed their second headlining tour in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Having completed the recording of their new songs, Behemoth entered Hendrix Studio for the second time, with help of their friend and sound engineer Arkadiusz Malczewski, and produced Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond). The result was impressive and overwhelming for their detractors who thought that the band couldn't reach newer heights following Thelema.6.[citation needed]
Behemoth live in 2007

In February 2003, the band started their first tour in Norway, playing in cities such as Bergen, Oslo and Stavanger. On March 11, 2003, the American premiere, scheduled by Century Media Records, headlined Behemoth's first appearance in the US continent. The tour started on the 9th of March at the New Jersey's Metalfest and continued with a decent amount[citation needed] of shows across America and Canada, with the company of Deicide, Revenge, Vehemence and Amon Amarth. Shortly after doing their first US tour the band was invited to join the Blackest of the Black Tour by Glenn Danzig. The already legendary festival included acts like Danzig, Superjoint Ritual, Nile, and Opeth. In the fall of 2003, Behemoth flew over to US to complete their third tour with Six Feet Under, Skinless and Black Dahlia Murder. The band did their Finnish debut appearance on the famous Tuska Festival with Ministry, Soulfly, among others. At that time, due to some line up difficulties, Nergal parted his ways with Havok and Novy, who decided to focus on activities with their own bands. Eventually, the band resumed touring in the UK and Europe.

In 2004, their seventh studio album, Demigod was released to good critical response. Recorded at the Hendrix Studios, the album debuted at number 15 on the national Polish album charts. Music videos for the songs "Conquer All" and "Slaves Shall Serve" were also shot. In fall 2005 the band headlined the Demigod supremacy Canadian tour 2005 with Necronomicon

In 2007, the band toured Europe alongside Napalm Death, Moonspell and Dew-Scented. Behemoth released their eighth studio album The Apostasy in July of that year. It was recorded at Radio Gdańsk studio in December, 2006. Shortly after the release of The Apostasy, the band was featured as one of Ozzfest 2007's second stage headliners, one of the four non-US bands playing that year.[3] In October/November 2007, they played their first US headlining tour alongside Job For A Cowboy, Gojira, and Beneath The Massacre.[4] In October/November 2007 the band toured Europe alongside Canadian death metal combo Kataklysm and Belgium's Aborted.
Live at Hole In The Sky 2008

In February 2008 Behemoth toured Europe headlining over Suicide Silence. In April/May 2008 the band toured North America as part of "The Invaluable Darkness" tour with Keep of Kalessin and headliner Dimmu Borgir. Behemoth spent the summer playing a number of prominent festivals all over Europe.

In October 2008, Behemoth will release their first live album, At the Arena ov Aion – Live Apostasy. Also, an EP called Ezkaton will be released featuring a re-recorded version of Chant for Eschaton, one new song, two covers, and three live songs. The EP has been released in North America on November 11.

ENSLAVED

Biography
Enslaved was formed in May 1991 by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson (also known as Kjell Grutle) when they were 13 and 17 years old, respectively. The band name was inspired by an Immortal demo track, "Enslaved in Rot".[2] After many line-up changes throughout their career, Bjørnson and Kjellson are the only remaining original members. By 2004 the line-up solidified with guitarist Arve Isdal, drummer Cato Bekkevold, and keyboardist/vocalist Herbrand Larsen.

Bjørnson and Kjellson had been playing in a death metal band called Phobia, but like many in the burgeoning black metal movement, they were looking for new sources of inspiration and expression.[2] Though Enslaved began as a prototypical Norwegian black metal band, they always incorporated song structures unusual for the genre, with several of their early songs expanding past the ten-minute mark. The album Eld (1997) is often considered to be the beginning of the band's shift towards progressive metal; that album's sixteen-minute track "793 (Slaget om Lindisfarne)" is often regarded as one of the peaks of the band's career. The band's shift toward progressive black metal was rendered complete with Mardraum (2000), which contained several multi-part epics such as "Større enn tid - Tyngre enn natt" and "Entrance - Escape"; from that point onward, the band's influence from progressive rock became stronger on each successive record, with several tracks (most prominently, "As Fire Swept Clean the Earth" from Below the Lights) even using Mellotron.[3] Mardraum, Monumension (2001), and Below the Lights (2003) can be regarded as having somewhat similar styles, although there is a clear progression of sound between the albums regardless; however, Isa (2004) and Ruun (2006) show a marked departure from previous sounds, with the latter almost abandoning any trace of black metal whatsoever, apart from Kjellson's vocals.

Although the band has used mainly English lyrics since Monumension, their albums before that were mostly recorded in Norwegian except on their first full-length album, where three songs had Icelandic lyrics, while the lyrics on Heimdallr was an Old Norse excerpt from Gylfaginning by Snorri Sturluson. Most of their lyrics relate to Norse mythology.

The band were also reported to have appeared in an episode of the American cartoon program South Park, but this was later revealed to be a practical joke at the expense of the Norwegian press. In 2007-2008 Bjørnson, Kjellson, and Isdal collaborated with the Norwegian noise duo Fe-Mail, under the name Trinacria. Enslaved released the album Vertebrae in September 2008.
